The
PACIFIC REGION was formed in 1975 as the Bay
Area Charter of the Ferrari Owners Club. In
1989 the PACIFIC REGION left the FOC and
affiliated with the Ferrari Club of America.
The first meeting of the PACIFIC REGION was
held in Sunnyvale with 35 prospective
members in attendance. Ernie Mendicki " lost
the toss of the coin" and became the first
President while Howard Ashmore was the
Chairman of the new Board of Directors.
Today there are 600 members in the region
which extends north to the Oregon border
from Fresno in the South. The Reno area is a
member of the region. Clearly, the PACIFIC
REGION is the most active of the 15 regions
of the FCA. Monthly, there are one or more
social events, a ride and drive or a tech
session. The Board of Directors meets once a
month for dinner at the home of one of its
members. All club members are welcome to
attend the board meetings.
Time has established many traditions
within the club. The George Critchfield
Memorial "Delta Dash" in January inaugurates
the New Year. March features a St Patrick’s
drive and dinner produced by Gil Lucero,
while May features a Spring Spectacular
produced by Bill Schworer, now in its 18th
year. From its second year of existence the
club has held an annual picnic during the
month of July. The club has for many years
been intimately involved with the
"happening" at the Monterey Historics. Each
year the club Vintage Concours has been a
large part of the Concorso Italiano during
that weekend with over 300 Ferraris on
display or being judged. The Hill Climb at
Virginia City, held in September, is now in
its 37th year. This 3-day event
is one of our most popular events and is
always sold out. The road from Silver City
up to Virginia City is 5 miles long and
normally 80 Ferraris and Shelby’s drive the
hill for 2 full days with a celebratory
banquet on Sunday night. November always
features the annual meeting and election of
officers and directors of the board for the
ensuing year. December invariably features
the very popular Holiday party.
Additionally, we have tech sessions each
year, almost monthly a one day ride and
drive on back country roads, several
concours, winery tours, track events and
other social functions. In the recent years
many of the new members drive F430's, 360
Modena's, and 550/575 Maranellos. Many of
the older cars have retired to their garages
and when they appear it is a delight to
every one to see them on the road.
FERRARI PACIFIC, our monthly
newsletter is edited and published by Steve
Souza, and this publication keeps members
informed of coming events and reports of
those concluded while also providing fun
articles related to our interests.
Members of the PACIFIC REGION were
instrumental in the events at Monterey in
1984 that honored the Ferrari marque. The
PACIFIC REGION hosted the Annual Meet of the
Ferrari Club of America in Monterey in 1994.
The PACIFIC REGION hosted the Annual Meet
again in 2004. There were over 1000 Ferraris
at the Meet.
The PACIFIC REGION is well represented at
the national level. Currently Gil Lucero is
the Regional Director and President of our
PACIFIC REGION, and represents us with the
FCA. Ed Gilbertson who has been the
National Preservation Chairman and the head
of judging for national concours events
passes on his legacy to form the structure
of future concours. Tish Thinesen is our
Director of Concours. John Hurabiell serves
as the National Legal Chairman
What is particularly noteworthy about the
PACIFIC REGION is the level of involvement
and commitment of its members to each other
and to honoring the Ferrari marque as it was
meant to be honored -
on the road.
